Cosgrove review of Bradford Bill adopted by Government
Member of Parliament for Waimakariri Clayton Cosgrove welcomes the adoption by the Government of his idea to conduct a review of the Sue Bradford Bill after it has been in force for two years.
"I took a lot to be convinced of the wisdom of the Bradford Bill, but I support the Bill because it is the right thing to do," Mr Cosgrove said.
"There has been a lot of scaremongering by opponents of the Bill, and I believe there is simply no substance to claims the Bill will criminalise good parents because in essence little will change except people who use excessive violence on their children will no longer have a defence in law."
"I pushed for a condition to be included in the Bill that provides an important safeguard for good, caring parents so that Parliament can have another look after two years to check the evidence and make sure the Bill is working as intended.
"I firmly believe the review after two years will reveal that people's fears about the Bill will be proven to be unfounded."
