Roadmap guides future of Kiwi energy research
A 'Science Roadmap' for Energy research released today will guide a crucial area of research for New Zealand, says
Research Science and Technology Minister Steve Maharey.
The Energy Research Roadmap sets out the broad range of research capabilities New Zealand will need to deliver
sustainable energy in the 21st century.
"Research and science will play a critical role in responding to our energy challenge and ensuring energy sector remains
globally competitive," says Research, Science and Technology Minister Steve Maharey.
"The government is committed to a sustainable and affordable energy system which minimises greenhouse gas emissions, and
which will give New Zealand an enduring competitive advantage over other countries.
"As energy sources become more diverse, sustainable and widely distributed, our scientists will need to study a wider
range of sources ? such as wind power, wave power and hydrogen cells.
"This will require some changes in the way we do research. The roadmap will guide work to improve research
co-ordination, enhance our international connections and ensure effective partnerships with industry."
The Energy Research Roadmap is one of a series of "Roadmaps for Science" that are designed to guide New Zealand's
science and research activity. It supports the recently released Draft New Zealand Energy Strategy.
The Government invests about $18 million in energy research, including a boost of $3 million in the 2006 Budget.
