Early childhood education policy lets down kids
Many playcentres and kohanga reo will be forced to close under the Government's policy on early childhood education, says National's Associate Education spokeswoman, Paula Bennett.
"Parent-led centres are the backbone of many communities - they provide a meeting place for parents and children, encourage community engagement, and in many areas offer a chance for people to get to know their neighbours.
"The Government's 20-hours-free early childhood education does not include parent-led centres, so many will be forced to close.
"The Ministry has admitted it does not have a plan to ensure the continuing viability of these centres.
"This Government's one-size-fits-all does not work - parents want choice.
"Some parents and their children get huge advantages from attending kohanga reo and playcentres.
"It would be a big blow to many communities to not have these centres supported."
