Congratulations over Fiji talks
Fiji Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and Commodore Frank Bainimarama are to be congratulated for taking up New Zealand’s
invitation to meet for talks in Wellington today, says National’s Associate Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman, John
Hayes.
“It is encouraging that the process has begun well and will continue in the future.
“Any solution must be owned by the Fiji people and not be imposed by an outside power.”
Mr Hayes also congratulated Foreign Minister Winston Peters and Prime Minister Helen Clark for taking the overdue
initiative.
“National hopes this is the beginning of a calm and reasoned debate.
“A peaceful outcome would be the best possible result for all Fijians, and would reassure all Pacific nations that
greater stability in the region had been achieved.”
