The call for an independent body to set election funding rules by anti- corruption organisation Transparency International is welcomed by ACT Leader Rodney Hide.
"Allowing politicians to set their own rules for election spending is like putting the fox in charge of the hen house" said Mr Hide.
"An independent commission would ensure that the system is fair to all parties and there can be no question over the legitimacy of the electoral process.
"Public confidence in the electoral system is a vital part of a liberal democracy and can only be assured if political parties are kept out of the rule setting process.
