The Government's response to a report from the Small Business Advisory Group overlooks a key instrument in cutting back
red tape - a Regulatory Responsibility Bill that will come before Parliament next month, says the Bill's promoter, ACT
Leader Rodney Hide.
"If the Government really wants to get tough on red tape, they will support my Bill when it comes before Parliament on
November 15", Rodney Hide said.
"The Regulatory Responsibility Bill means that each law and regulation will have to be measured against principles of
responsible management.
"Laws and regulations will have to be examined to make sure they don't undermine property rights, limit voluntary
cooperation, take effect retrospectively or create unnecessary uncertainty.
"These reports will be published so the public can be sure that the principles of responsible management are in always
in the minds of those responsible for writing the rules that businesses have to live by.
"When the Institute of Chartered Accountants surveyed political parties before last year's election, parties indicated
widespread support for a Regulatory Responsibility Bill.
"If parties stick to their election policies, my Bill will progress to Select Committee, where the public and small
businesses will get to have their say.
"I look forward to the Government's support for cutting red tape, and making it easier for businesspeople to do
business", Mr Hide said.
