Maharey announces appointments to NZ on Air Board
Broadcasting Minister Steve Maharey today announced the appointment of Nicole Hoey, and the reappointment of Paul Smith
to the NZ On Air Board.
Nicole Hoey’s appointment is for three years. Board member Paul Smith has been reappointed for a second term.
"Nicole Hoey has extensive experience in the industry, including a continuing role as deputy chair of the Screen Council
of New Zealand, and former presidency of the Screen Production and Development Association (SPADA)," Steve Maharey said.
"Paul Smith has a wide knowledge of broadcasting, journalism and the creative industries. He is an experienced
journalist, teacher and author, regarded as a leading media specialist.
"These members bring a wealth of experience to the board. I am pleased that both Nicole and Paul will continue to help
New Zealand on Air in its important work."
Nicole Hoey replaces James Coleman who has completed two terms on the Board.
NZ On Air is a Crown Entity, established pursuant to section 35 of the Broadcasting Act 1989 (the Act) to reflect and
develop New Zealand identity and culture and ensure television and radio broadcasting reaches as many New Zealand
diverse communities as possible.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON APPOINTMENTS
Nicole Hoey (Ngati Kahu and Te Aupouri) brings two decades of film production experience and skills in producing
television programmes for children. She has extensive experience as business owner of a Māori independent production
company. Her experience in film and television production includes a continuing role as deputy chair of the Screen
Council of New Zealand, and former presidency of the Screen Production and Development Association (SPADA).
Paul Smith is an experienced journalist, teacher and author, regarded as a leading media specialist. His books include a
text used by media students on television deregulation. Experienced in all branches of the media here and overseas, he
chaired the board committee which was instrumental in the introduction of the Charter.
