Update on Rugby World Cup stadium evaluation
The project team evaluating the feasibility of possible venues for the Rugby World Cup 2011 finals has had its report
back date extended, Rugby World Cup Minister Trevor Mallard said today.
The report was due in mid-October but is now due in three to four weeks. It will then be considered by Cabinet.
"It is vitally important that we get this decision right so that we can deliver a world-class stadium which complements
and enhances the city’s conference and major event-hosting potential and which will also drive Auckland’s aspirations to
be a world class city.
"The project team has asked for more time to complete their assessment of a number of technical and logistical matters
in order to provide a more robust analysis for the government on the best site for a world-class stadium.
"This is a crucial decision for Auckland that will leave a lasting legacy for the city, and also involve substantial
investment. For these reasons, it is important that we take the responsible approach, and allow the necessary time to
explore the options as thoroughly as possible, " Trevor Mallard said.
"I would like to express my appreciation for the constructive input of the regional and city councils to date and their
support for the continuation of this process.
"I would also like to reiterate the government is committed to ensuring that New Zealand has a world-class stadium in
time for the tournament in 2011," Trevor Mallard said.
In order to protect the integrity of the process, there will be no further comment until Cabinet has received and
considered the report.
