High Crime Rates set off alarms for the public
The Labour Government continues to preside over ever-worsening crime rates despite trying to convince the public that crime rates have decreased.
A New Zealand Police Report has shown a sharp 6.9% increase in total crime over the last year. Crime has also risen by 6.3% in the North Shore/ Waitakere area.
It is clear that this Government is failing to deliver safer communities. These figures illustrate yet another area where the Labour Government is delivering inadequate results.
Incriminating evidence
Like many people around the country, I am alarmed at the figures in the Crime Statistics for the year ending June 2006. It is clear that action is needed to stop further increases in crime.
The government has claimed that crime has only increased 3% in North Shore in the last year.
However this overall figure disguises some very large increases. The figures are particularly high for dishonesty crimes including burglary and car conversion, which showed a 6% increase. Property damage shows a 12% increase and we can see evidence of that with much more graffiti around the place.
Fighting crime
These increases in crime rates can only be solved with more police.
Over the last seven years the north shore police numbers have remained stubbornly stuck at about 200, despite nearly a 20% increase in the cities population during that time.
That means there is less than one police officer per 1000 people, which is the worst police to population ratio in the whole country.
The government is already behind on its recruiting targets for the extra 1000 police.
Solving New Zealand’s crime should be the government’s highest priority. That means getting serious about recruiting so that north shore can get its fair share of police, which should be no less than 230.
