Australia’s announcement today of a new language and values test for prospective immigrants adds weight to calls for its introduction here, said New Zealand First Deputy Leader Peter Brown.
“As part of New Zealand First’s confidence and supply agreement with the Government, the Ministry of Immigration is currently conducting a full review of immigration legislation. We believe the Minister should look at introducing such tests as part of the review.
“Sharing basic common values such as language and culture is necessary in any society. By ensuring immigrants have an understanding of Kiwi values, later problems can be avoided when newcomers are unable to fit in.
“The Minister should consider the introduction of a civics programme for immigrants to provide them with an understanding of New Zealand customs, and help foster values shared by all New Zealanders,” concluded Mr Brown.
