Constructive Discussions On Health System Overdue
The constructive discussions the Minister of Health is reportedly willing to have with senior doctors can’t start soon
enough if they will improve the operation of the health system, says New Zealand First’s health spokesperson Barbara
Stewart.
“Specialists and surgeons have publicly expressed their concern about aspects of the Government’s health policies but it
would be more productive if they were talking directly to the Minister, rather than via the news media.
“New Zealand already has an unfortunate reliance on overseas-trained doctors and medical personnel and it is foolhardy
to keep on ignoring people who can take themselves and their skills to other countries practically overnight should they
so decide.
“Over the past few months we have seen strike action and demonstrations by junior doctors, radiographers and
pathologists – all people we can ill afford to lose.
“The issues of perceived political indifference to patients on waiting lists, unmet need and hospital under funding
would all benefit from constructive discussion between the Minister and senior doctors and the sooner the better.
“We hope to hear that an early date has been set for such dialogue,” said Mrs Stewart.
