DOC fights ratepayers over mangroves with taxpayer money
Communities are having to pay for Department of Conservation moves to block mangrove control, says National’s Associate
Local Government spokeswoman, Sandra Goudie.
“Instead of allowing communities to decide what is best for them, DOC is using taxpayer dollars to fight them over
mangrove management.”
Ms Goudie is commenting on an appeal by DOC against a proposed Northland Regional Council plan change that would allow
for management of mangroves.
“Despite being involved in extensive consultation, DOC is continuing to appeal the plan change which would recognise
circumstances where accelerated encroachment of mangroves could reduce or remove the ability of people to provide for
their own social, economic and cultural wellbeing.
“DOC is not only ignoring the wishes of the community, it is forcing councils to use ratepayer dollars to defend moves
supported by the community.
“DOC is failing to support communities and is costing both ratepayers and taxpayers money.”
