Social Report shows real gains for Maori
“The Social Report, released today, confirms that there have been significant gains in Mäori wellbeing since the mid-1990s” said Maori Affairs Minister Parekura Horomia.
“The report shows that Mäori outcomes are improving faster than for non-Mäori in a number of key areas, including life expectancy, suicide, participation in early childhood education and tertiary education, school leavers with higher qualifications, employment, unemployment, median hourly earnings, population with low incomes, housing affordability, and road deaths.”
“Outcomes for Mäori are better than for the population as a whole in the areas of participation in tertiary education, participation in cultural and arts activities, perceptions of safety, and regular contact with family and friends.”
“While outcomes for Mäori lag behind those of non-Mäori in many areas and it will be some time before the difference in outcomes is eliminated, the trends are overwhelmingly positive.”
Highlights from the report include:
- the average 2000-02 Mäori life expectancy figure had improved by 2.4 years for males and 1.9 years for females from the average for 1995-97
- the Mäori suicide rate decreased from 17.5 per 100,000 in 1996 to 13.5 per 100,000 in 2003
- the participation rate for Mäori children in early childhood education increased from 84.8% in 2000 to 89.9% in 2005
- the proportion of Mäori school leavers with qualifications higher than NCEA level 1 increased from 37.4% in 1996 to 47.4% in 2004
- the Mäori unemployment rate was 8.6% in 2005, down from a peak of 25.4% in 1992
- employment rates for Mäori increased by 10.1% between 1996 and 2005, a larger increase than for the non-Mäori population
- over the eight years to June 2005, increases in inflation adjusted earnings from wages and salary jobs were higher for Mäori (18%) than for Pacific people or Europeans (13%)
- between 1997/98 and 2003/04, the proportion of families containing a Mäori adult who were living with a low income decreased from 30.3% to 23.6%
- the proportion of households containing at least one Mäori adult who were spending 30% or more of their income on housing dropped from 31% in 2001 to 21% in 2004
- road deaths for Mäori reduced from 26 per 100,000 in 1996 to 20 per 100,000 in 2001.
