Salmond reappointed Chair of Historic Places Trust
Dame Anne Salmond has been reappointed Chair of the Historic Places Trust Board and five members have been reappointed
the Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Judith Tizard announced today.
Trust Board chair Dame Anne Salmond is a respected scholar specialising in Maori history. Professor in Maori Studies and
Social Anthropology at the University of Auckland, she will continue to bring a strong bi-cultural perspective to the
board which she has chaired since 2002.
Deputy Chair John Acland, a former Board member of Meat New Zealand from South Canterbury, will chair the Totara
Redevelopment Advisory Committee. He will oversee a substantial project to develop Totara Estate, a Historic Places
Trust property in North Otago, as a showcase for heritage tourism and the meat industry.
Tumu te Heuheu is Paramount Chief of Tuwharetoa and a member of the Waitangi National Trust Board. Chair of Nga Whenua
Rahui since its inception in 1990, he was recently appointed chair of the United Nations World Heritage Committee on
which he has served as New Zealand delegate since 2003.
Te Aue Davis (Ngāti Maniapoto) is a well-known weaver and conservationist and has been a recipient of a Te Waka Toi
award for her research into natural cultural resources. A longstanding member of the Historic Places Trust Board and the
Te Māori Manaaki Taonga Trust Board, she joined the Nga Whenua Rahui Committee in 2003.
Dr Merata Kawharu (Ngati Whatua) is a former tutor in Māori Studies and is presently a Research Fellow at the James
Henare Māori Research Centre in Auckland. She has a close association with Te Kawautikitiki Charitable Trust, and is a
member of the Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee at the University of Auckland.
Murray Mouat has extensive knowledge of properties of historic importance. He owns and manages his own property
management consultancy in Invercargill and is a regional manager for DHL. He has wide governance experience in the
private and public sector and has been a member of the NZHPT Board since 1996.
The Minister welcomed the reappointment of the Chair and members for the remainder of their current terms. John Acland
has been appointed to a three-year second term on the board.
The recently amended Historic Places legislation reduced the number of board members from 11 to 9. Six members are
appointed by the Minister and the remainder are elected by members of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
