Will Local Body Rates Cost The Family Home?

ACT Leader Rodney Hide says the case of a Wellington man, who's been told that he should sell his family home if he
can't pay the rates, shows why it's important for a Select Committee to consider his Bill to cap rates increases.
"In many parts of the country, rates increases are out of control. My Bill would put ratepayers back in charge", Mr Hide
said.
"Plimmerton pensioner Roger Beauchamp bought his property in 1960 for ₤2000. He built his own house for $18,000. His
rates bill this year is around $2800.
"Many people struggle to pay rates demands which increase year after year.
"Mr Beauchamp has been told that if he can't afford his rates bill, he should sell the house.
"My Bill, due to be debated in Parliament next Wednesday, would limit increases in rates to inflation plus 2% in any
year, or inflation plus 4% over any three years.
"Councils could seek an exemption from the cap for specific projects which have public support.
"The upward spiral of rates is unsustainable. All families have to live within a budget - so should local government.
"I hope that parties across the House will vote to send my Bill to Select Committee, so that the public can have their
say", Mr Hide said.
