MPs to promote Books in Homes
Government MPs will visit schools next week to deliver new books as part of the Books in Homes Government Book Week,
says Education Minister Steve Maharey.
Steve Maharey says the Labour-led government is a proud to supporter of Books in Homes, a literacy programme that
benefits around 80,000 young Kiwi kids.
"Each year the government contributes around $1.2 million a year to Books in Homes, which is also supported by more than
300 private sponsors," Steve Maharey said.
"As part of this year's Budget we agreed to provide Books in Homes with an additional $750,000 over the next four years.
This will make a difference for 25,000 more children in low socio-economic areas, putting an extra 125,000 books in
their homes."
Steve Maharey says it is essential that all children get a good start with reading and learn how much fun it can be.
"One of the great things about this programme is that it helps kids, and their parents, get excited about books and
develop lifelong habits of reading and having books in the house.
"The Labour-led government wants to ensure all children have the best possible start in education. That's why we put
such a strong emphasis on early education, and it's why we support programmes like Books in Homes that help ensure
parents are playing a part in their kids' education.
"We currently invest around $32 million a year in programmes to lift literacy standards in all schools, including $3.8
million a year for the Literacy Professional Development Programme."
