A symbol of peace and unity for our nation
The commemoration service being held and the tributes being made to Dame Te Ätäirangikaahu on the 40th anniversary of
her coronation is fitting recognition of the life and work of an outstanding New Zealander, say National MPs Gerry
Brownlee and Georgina te Heuheu.
Mr Brownlee, who is National’s Maori Affairs spokesman, says the jubilee celebrations at Türangawaewae today are a
timely reminder of how deeply she is loved and respected by many.
“During her reign, Dame Te Ätäirangikaahu has entertained kings, queens, princes, princesses and presidents at her marae
at Türangawaewae, and has herself travelled widely both here and abroad to be received by many of these leaders,” says
Mrs te Heuheu, from the marae at Türangawaewae.
“For the past 30 years, in the course of my work and family relationships, I have been privileged to witness something
of her gracious and generous contribution to our nation.
“The National Party recognises Dame Te Ätäirangikaahu’s outstanding leadership, and wishes her sincere congratulations
on this significant occasion,”say the MPs.
