Minister congratulates Waikato and Ngai Tahu upon receipt of their fisheries assets
Minister of Māori Affairs and Associate Fisheries Minister Parekura Horomia said today he was delighted to see Waikato and Ngai Tahu receive their respective fisheries assets.
"Waikato and Ngai Tahu now join 19 other Iwi in being recognised as Mandated Iwi Organisations (MIO).
"Recognition by the Māori Fisheries Trust, Te Ohu Kaimoana, as a MIO is a prerequisite to receiving fisheries assets.
As the first part of the asset transfer, Waikato today received fisheries assets worth approximately $26 million; Ngai Tahu received approximately $58 million in fisheries assets.
"These two allocations compliment other celebrations affecting both these Iwi right now. Yesterday Sir Tipene O'Regan, an instigator in the initial Ngai Tahu treaty claim, received an Honorary DCom from Victoria University. Over the next few days Māori from all over the country will be converging on Turangawaewae Marae to pay their respects to Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of her coronation.
"I send my congratulations to Waikato and Ngai Tahu on their achievement today. I also wish to acknowledge Te Ohu Kaimoana for their assistance in the process.
