Chris Carter to visit Tuvalu to discuss whaling
Conservation Minister Chris Carter is to visit Tuvalu this weekend to discuss whaling issues ahead of this year's
International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting.
"The numbers at this year's IWC meeting are very finely balanced. It looks increasingly likely the pro-whaling nations
will achieve a majority on the Commission for the first time. The votes of all members of the Commission, including
countries such as Tuvalu, could prove crucial," Mr Carter said today.
"Tuvalu has voted with the pro-whaling nations before, but Tuvalu is also a member of the Pacific community where whale
conservation and eco-tourism offers considerable economic opportunities.
"New Zealand has agreed to fund and conduct a training and survey programme in Tuvalu to establish baseline information
about whales and dolphins in their waters," Mr Carter said.
"This funding is an example of our commitment to assist Pacific nations with conservation measures. The intention of my
visit is to underscore this commitment, highlight the opportunities of whale conservation and explore other ways New
Zealand might be able to assist with biodiversity protection."
Mr Carter will depart for Tuvalu this weekend, returning Monday.
