National will scrutinise costs of new courthouse
The National Party’s Shadow Attorney General, Christopher Finlayson, says he expects the costs of the new Supreme Court
building in Wellington will be closely scrutinised.
“While I support a new building for the highest court in New Zealand, taxpayers will need to be assured they are getting
a facility that meets public needs and is value for money.
“Until we see the final plans, and are given access to the official paper trail it’s impossible to tell whether taxpayer
money is being squandered.
“But given that the official cost has quadrupled from $11 million in 2002 to a reported $45 million today, of course
there will be some serious questions that need to be asked.
“Given the blow-outs in construction budgets elsewhere under Labour’s watch, the Supreme Court can expect close
scrutiny,” says Mr Finlayson.
