Maori Party Congratulates Descendant of Tuwharetoa and Kahungunu to new rank as Chief of the NZ Defence Force
The Maori Party tonight congratulated Major General Jerry Mateparae who will be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in his successful appointment to the country's top military post as Chief of Defence Force.
"We are delighted for this nation, and share the immense pride of the Andrews and Mateparae whanau, in recognising the elevation of this son of Ngati Tuwharetoa and Kahungunu" said Tariana Turia, Co-leader of the Maori Party.
"We have always been impressed with Jerry's dedication and commitment as an officer of the armed forces" said Mrs Turia.
"That he was the highest ranked Maori officer in the New Zealand Defence Force, and the youngest military chief to head the New Zealand Army, gave some indication of his ability and commitment".
"People of Whanganui will be very proud of Jerry given he spent so much of his early life here" said Mrs Turia.
