More progress needed on MenzB
Progress is still too slow in getting children under five fully immunised against meningococcal B, says National's
Health spokesman, Tony Ryall.
His comments follow a statement from Associate Health Minister Mita Ririnui headed ‘Good news for Maori in latest
Meningococcal B vaccination figures’.
"Frankly, its not as good as people would hope,” says Mr Ryall.
"Only 69% of under-fives are fully immunised, compared to 66% in November.
"Less than half of Maori kids under five are fully immunised – 49% compared to 46% in November.
"People involved in the campaign are telling me that it’s getting harder and harder to get parents along to get their
under-fives immunised.
“The effort has got to be stepped up, and a re-think of the current approach is needed. The campaign should look at
recruiting community people who can enlist friends and families to get into the programme.
"It is important that parents take responsibility for getting their children protected," says Mr Ryall.
