National issues challenge to Maori leaders
National Party Leader Don Brash is calling on Maori to measure the promises of political parties against what is actually delivered.
"Maori should not allow their support to be taken for granted by any single political party."
Ratana has a long-standing relationship with the Labour Party.
Dr Brash made the comments after being welcomed to the Ratana Marae near Wanganui today, suggesting that political support should be decided on the basis of how political parties deliver improved living standards to all New Zealanders, including Maori.
Dr Brash also moved to quash the misconception that National was not in favour of Maori culture and development.
"All the members of my caucus want our children to grow up in a country where all of them - Maori, Asian, European, Pacific Islander - have an equal chance to get a first class education, where they all have equal access to the best healthcare our community can afford, where they all have a chance to grow up to enjoy well-paid jobs.
"You won't be surprised when I say that in my opinion it is the National Party which offers the greatest hope for all New Zealanders - Maori and non-Maori alike.
"National wants to work with you and with all other New Zealanders to build a culture of aspiration; to ensure that your children are succeeding at school; to ensure that your people are not wasting away on welfare; to ensure that your people are safe from the criminals who seek to prey upon you; and to ensure that you get the healthcare which you need.
"A National Government will be fair and will treat all New Zealanders, of whatever race, with respect," Dr Brash said.
