Public confidence in police is in Govt’s hands
National’s Law & Order spokesman, Simon Power, says it is essential that the Government ensures the changes recommended by the review
into the 111 system are fully implemented in light of a Police Complaints Authority report.
He is commenting on the PCA report into the handling of the 111 call made by Iraena Asher.
“It is essential that the police take note of what the PCA says and that the Government give them the resources and
training to be able to meet the recommendations of the review.
“It is also essential that Annette King honours her promise to make lifting the public’s confidence in the police her No
1 priority.
“Just three weeks ago a UMR poll showed that trust in the police had plummeted from 78% of the public in 1996 rating the
police as doing a good job, to 59% last year.
“This has got to improve, and the solution is in the Government’s hands. By giving the Police the resources to do the
job properly – and that’s not just in the 111 system – public confidence will be restored.”
