Put speed cameras in the right places
National's Law & Order spokesman, Simon Power, says he hopes New Zealand's speed cameras were used to encourage people to slow down over
the holiday period rather than as merely a tool to fill Labour's ticket quotas.
"Speed cameras should be in accident black spots in order to encourage sensible driving practices in dangerous areas.
"Labour's reputation when it comes to ticketing has been on quantity not quality. But we need to concentrate on quality
by targeting the right areas if we are to bring the road toll down.
"We all know speed cameras are out there and are issuing tickets. The top 10 cameras issued close to 60,000 tickets
between them in 2004/05.
"National supports the use of cameras as part of the campaign to improve road safety, but we are conscious of the fact
that New Zealanders will only tolerate the use of cameras if safety is the target - as opposed to revenue-gathering.
"That means putting cameras in the right places and getting people to slow down," says Mr Power.
