TVNZ A Dog's Show If Left To ACT And Nats
New Zealand First is warning of the ulterior motives of ACT and the National Party to sell off TVNZ completely and leave it to the vagaries of market forces.
“It’s apparent that these economic fundamentalist parties have no interest in public broadcasting or charters or any of the principles of balancing public and commercial interests that underpin TVNZ,” said broadcasting spokesperson Pita Paraone.
“What they fail to notice in their blind adherence to outdated economic theories is that TVNZ has performed well given the constraints within which it is obliged to operate by the charter.
“The figures speak for themselves, and I suggest that National and ACT remove their ideological blinkers and recognise that there is a place for public service television that promotes our unique qualities.
“New Zealand First believes that TVNZ should be structured in such a way that TV2 operates commercially, leaving TV One to fulfill the public broadcasting function of the charter.
“We will continue to argue for that outcome, but in the meantime I would like to give credit where it is due to TVNZ for its financial performance and its local programming content, despite the internal difficulties that have beset it. I invite ACT and National to swallow their pride and do the same,” said Mr Paraone.
