Minister for the Environment
23 November 2005 Media Statement
Statement by David Benson-Pope
I am pleased that this matter has now been resolved.
I note specifically the police comment that they have "weighed up all the information and advice available" in making
their decision that the allegations made against me warrant no further action.
Teachers hope to make a significant contribution to the young people in their charge. I have been humbled by the
hundreds of letters and comments of support from former pupils, their parents and colleagues that acknowledge the
contribution I made as a teacher.
I have made some of this material available to the public. I am also aware of information in the public domain about the
character and standing of those that made the allegations against me.
If these allegations had substance I believe those making them would have taken them to the police, their principal, a
teacher, a councillor, their parents, or any other person, some 23 years ago, when they allege the events took place.
It has been a difficult few months for my family and myself. I would like to thank all those who showed their support
and kindness to us over this period.
I now intend to continue to get on with the job I was elected to do – representing my constituents' interests in
Parliament and serving the people of New Zealand.
I will be making no further comment to the media on this matter.
