Minister to visit endangered memorial
Women’s Affairs Minister Lianne Dalziel and several high profile women will attend a special gathering aimed at
highlighting the importance of preserving the tile Suffrage Memorial in Khartoum Place, Auckland.
The future of the Memorial, which was erected in 1993 to commemorate the centennial of Women’s Suffrage in New Zealand,
is threatened by the Auckland City Council's planned redevelopment of Khartoum Place.
Auckland woman Marie Taylor has invited the Minister of Women's Affairs to view the Memorial and receive information
from the group of prominent Auckland women she has gathered together to attempt to save the Memorial.
Marie Taylor has also invited the designer of the tile memorial, artist Claudia Pond-Eley, to explain the significance
of the Memorial to the Minister. Members of the group expected to attend include Dame Cath Tizard, Dame Dorothy
Winstone, Dame Thea Muldoon and Dame Georgina Kirby.
