“The decision today to disassemble the worksite at Waipuna and Waipapa (Cable Bay), recognises the need to let everyone
have a say about developments in their area, and is a triumph for the people of the Far North” stated Hone Harawira,
Member of Parliament for Te Tai Tokerau.
Contractors engaged by Crystal Waters Development today announced they would pull out from the worksite to build an
overhead footbridge across State Highway 10. With the resource consent expiring next week, this enables a new
opportunity to go through the notified consultation process required by the Far North District Council.
“I am happy that the outcome of some very staunch advocacy has been one that responds to the call from the people” said
Mr Harawira.
“The people of this area, including Ngati Kahu, and many pakeha, have been united in their opposition to the
developments, seeing it as an abuse of their environment. I attended the community protest this morning in solidarity
with Ngati Kahu and other local people. I heard from the people there, about the negative impacts on the foreshore that
could proceed from this development”.
“The Maori Party is pleased that the foreshore and seabed at Waipuna and Waipapa has been protected by the courage and
commitment of local citizens” said Mr Harawira. “This issue won’t go away, but today’s actions signal all parties
recognise the need for meaningful dialogue with the local people, including of course, mana whenua”.
