PM appalled at New Delhi blasts
Prime Minister Helen Clark said today she was distressed to learn that more than 50 people had died in three explosions
in the Indian capital, New Delhi.
Helen Clark condemned the attacks, and said she was sending a letter of condolence to the Indian Prime Minister,
Manmohan Singh.
"There can be no tolerance of such deliberate and cowardly acts of terrorism,” Helen Clark said.
"As always, our sympathies go first and foremost to those caught in this tragedy, and their families, friends, and
communities. Our thoughts are also with Indian families in New Zealand who will be very concerned about the welfare of
relatives in New Delhi.
“Adding to the great sense of tragedy is that this is a celebratory time for Hindus as they mark Diwali, the festival of
lights.”
No New Zealand casualties have been reported. The Press Trust of Indian has reported that the blasts occurred in markets
popular with foreign tourists.
“Such cold-blooded violence aimed at innocent citizens again underlines how important it is that the international
community continues to work together to counter terrorism,” Helen Clark said.
