We must have faith that the police will be more successful in retrieving Pania of the Reef than her lover was in the
traditional myth, said Heather Roy, ACT's National Security Spokesman.
"Unfortunately for Karitoki, even offering a chief's ransom couldn't bring the original Pania home. Napier is likely to
find the same applies today" Heather Roy said.
"Even if a financial lure could tempt the thieves out of hiding, we shouldn't set a precedent of rewarding theft. Crime
mustn't pay.
"New Zealand's police do an exceptional job at tracking down criminals, no matter where they hide. We should let the
Police investigation continue without political interference.
"It's highly likely that Pania's thief is an offender already known to local lawyers. As a former criminal defender,
perhaps Mr Fairbrother might be more productive helping the official investigation" Mrs Roy said.
