ACT National Security spokesman Heather Roy has today endorsed the Police initiative of instituting a "Zero Tolerance" approach to people carrying weapons.
"ACT has long called for 'Zero Tolerance' to be adopted for criminal offences. We shouldn't have to wait for a crisis before the police are given a license to get tough on crime" Mrs Roy said.
"Counties-Manukau police policy of arresting anyone caught with weapons or commiting violence sends a simple message - that every crime is taken seriously, and every criminal can expect to be punished.
"Adopted across New Zealand, Zero Tolerance would reduce criminal offending. Crime wouldn't pay, and the flow on effect would alleviate the overcrowding problem in prisons.
"New Zealand's Police do a good job, and deserve support from Government and their new Minister.
"Government's role is provide security for its people. Kiwis deserve protection from thugs and thieves. If Zero Tolerance is good enough for South Auckland, the Minister should extend it across the country" Mrs Roy said.
