Helen Knows Best
The hallmark of the Clark-led government is that "Helen knows best." She is so confident about the correctness of her
views so that she has no qualms on imposing them on the rest of us - for our own good! This week, we had an insight into
her views for the next three years. We are now supposed to have our lunch, morning tea and afternoon tea at the time she
dictates.
Is there a great un-discovered problem in New Zealand? People starving at work? I guess it means no more coffee and
sandwiches at the desk when you have to complete an urgent job. No wonder Australia's productivity continues to outstrip
New Zealand's. Of course, this is just the latest of "Helen knows best" edicts: * No smoking in RSA's
* No smacking of naughty children
* No do-it-yourself home building
* No marriage is a good marriage
* No speeding (except for me)
* No politically incorrect speech
* No consultation without the Treaty Nothing is too small for Helen's edicts. The latest is:
* No free speech on aeroplanes (except to apologise?). The big question in this election is this - do we want
Helen to keep telling us what to do? VIOLENT CRIME UP AGAIN IN NORTH SHORE The crime rates for the North Shore/Waitakere
police district belie the government's recent claims that crime has dropped by 7%. In our district, Violent Crime is up
22% since 2000.
Even taking into account population growth, violent crime is up 9% per 1000 residents. Violent crime is of the greatest
concern to North Shore residents, and is clearly not under control under the Labour government.
North Shore has been missing out on police numbers. Our city has less than one police officer per 1000 people. We have
not had any improvement. Since 1999 the number of police has been static; but our population has increased by 30,000
people. The best way to get tough on violent crime is more police and tougher sentences.
Under National, parole will be scrapped, and front line police numbers will be boosted. Repeat violent offenders will be
more likely to be served with preventative detention. The emphasis will be on tackling violent crime, not collecting
speeding revenue.
LABOUR LIES: # 7 MYTH# 7 : Crime Has Come Down Under Labour . Truth: In North Shore, violent crimes has gone up by 22%
since 2000. The police (NZ Herald 31 August) said fewer are bothering to report property crime, explaining much of the
"reduction" in property crime.
