Alexander: Harawira comments ridiculous
Donna Awatere Huata is in jail because she is a thief and not because of the colour of her skin, and her supporters need to wrap their heads around that, United Future law and order spokesman Marc Alexander said today.
"And if she and her husband are found to have hidden away funds to plead poverty and get legal aid, then I hope she gets whatever sentence is coming to her doubled and he gets put away too."
"That would simply be inexcusable and a fraud upon a fraud and that would completely eliminate any suggestion of remorse on their part and they should have the book thrown at them," he said.
Mr Alexander said he was particularly disappointed to see high profile Maori Party candidate Hone Harawira claiming Awatere Huata was in jail because of a racist justice system.
"I hope the Maori Party finds a stronger position than that because if that is the level of their thinking then Maori hopes will be sunk.
I think the public, Maori and Pakeha, don't buy this 'poor me' garbage in any form, and in the end it is the language of losers looking for excuses.
"You have to ask if people who hold that kind of view are even capable of advancing the cause of their people," he said.
"Awatere Huata is a liar and a thief - and her fellow inmates had it right when they abused her on her first day inside for stealing from Maori kids."
