Brash's broken petrol tax promise
Don Brash must break one of the two promises he has made to spend petrol tax says Cabinet Minister Pete Hodgson.
Yesterday, Don Brash pledged National to use petrol tax receipts to fund two separate things:
1. Income tax cuts, Dominion Post, Saturday 27 Aug 05:
"If we waive the petrol tax the capacity to provide income tax reduction is that degree reduced. We can't do both."
2. Building roads, National Radio, Saturday 27 Aug 05, a repeat of what he said in his speech to the AA on 1 April 05:
"All the petrol tax collected on the roads will be spent on the roads."
"So what's it to be Dr Brash, are you going to dump your promise to spend all the petrol tax on roads or your latest
promise to use the same money to support tax cuts? As you say yourself, "we can't do both."
