Midwife shortage after six long years of Labour
National’s Health spokesman, Paul Hutchison, says despite Helen Clark and Annette King’s rhetoric over health workforce
planning in the 1990s, as well as the huge amount of money they’ve poured into health in the past six years, expecting
mothers can’t find midwives to deliver their babies.
“Labour used to talk about choice, continuity of care and how they would fix the health system. Now, many dedicated
midwives around New Zealand are burnt-out and brassed off with the way they have been treated by Labour.
“The July OECD report highlighted that although Labour has put billions extra into health there has been little to show
for it.
“The fact that hundreds of expectant mothers around the country are unable to find a midwife – after all Labour’s empty
promises – is simply poor delivery and more proof that Labour has failed miserably in health,” says Dr Hutchison.
