Appointment to Historic Places Trust
Associate Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Judith Tizard today announced the appointment of Gerard O’Regan to the Mâori Heritage Council of the Historic Places Trust for a term of three years.
Ms Tizard expressed her confidence in the new appointment. “I welcome Mr O’Regan to the Council. Mr O’Regan’s links to the main South Island iwi, Ngai Tahu, and his knowledge of museums and archaeology will bring invaluable skills and experience to the Council,” Judith Tizard said.
Background information
Gerard O’Regan (Ngai Tahu) has an extensive knowledge of the Ngai Tahu community in Otago and Southland and the tribe’s cultural treasures. He has a background in management and curatorial work in the Ngai Tahu Development Corporation and regional museums in Otago and Southland. Gerard is a trustee of the Ngai Tahu Mâori Rock Art Trust and a former Vice-Chair of the Museums Association of New Zealand (1996-97) and is currently studying for a PhD in Archaeology at the University of Auckland.
