Greens applaud new attitude on Hayes Paddock
The Greens welcome the possible reprieve for Hayes Paddock, says Arts Culture and Heritage Spokesperson Mike Ward, who
will travel to Hamilton this Monday to attend a council-hosted public meeting on saving the historic state housing area.
"It is a charming neighbourhood and an important slice of New Zealand's housing history. I know how passionately
residents feel about their place and it is just great that Mayor Michael Redman is prepared, not just to listen to them,
but to begin a process to recognise and protect an internationally significant heritage site."
Mr Ward, whose own home is in one of Nelson's historic precincts, has visited and spoken with Hayes Paddock residents on
several occasions and will be attending Monday's meeting "to see how the process unfolds".
"As a resident and, at the time, a Nelson City Councillor, I was part of the process of gaining heritage status for my
own neighbourhood, so I have a reasonable understanding of the issues and the advantages. Heritage status doesn't give
absolute protection or prevent change, but it ought to ensure that any new developments and alterations are sympathetic
with the existing neighbourhood."
The Green MP says he recognises this is an issue for the locals to resolve, so views his latest visit as a 'fact
finder'.
"I often find myself called on for advice as I go around the country and watching how communities resolve such issues
can provide a useful role model," Mr Ward says.
Green Hamilton East candidate Daniel Howard will attend the meeting with Mr Ward.
