NEW ZEALAND FIRST’S TREATY OF WAITANGI POLICY
New Zealand First is proposing a radical shift in the government sector’s treatment of Maori, including a weeding out of
the “Bro ocracy”. The wasteful practice of Treaty related courses and token jobs for Maoris will end. However, the
integral place of Maori culture and language, unique to New Zealand, will be protected. As will sound policies for
economic and social development.
“New Zealand is on the cusp of talking a significant step forward in reconciling its race relations issues following the
release of the New Zealand First’s Treaty of Waitangi policy,” says Rt Hon Winston Peters.
“The politically correct separatist agenda of this and of former governments must be confronted.
“Only then can our true potential as a nation be realised.
“New Zealand First also strongly rejects the new assimilationist mantra of the National party, which decries all things
Maori and asserts that the key to Maori success is to make them like everybody else.
“We say Maori must be equal before the law and in their treatment by government, but Maori culture is unique to New
Zealand’s identity and must be protected as such.
“This is a nation-building step and we intend to take the people of New Zealand with us; after all it is their futures
we are discussing.
“The changes we are proposing require a substantial cultural shift within the government sector. Bureaucrats being what
they are will resist these changes, but they are necessary for progress,” Mr Peters said.
