TransTasman action to save humpbacks
The Green Party has called on the Government for more than just a limp-wristed protest to the International Whaling
Commission to stop plans for humpback whaling by Japan. "Words are just not enough to stop Japan's plans for this
barbaric slaughter," Greens Co-Leader Jeanette Fitzsimons says.
"We are calling on the Government to take serious action. If Japan felt there may be a threat to trade talks or to
diplomatic relations with our country, they may be more inclined to shelve this inhumane plan. Challenging the plans in
the World Court should also be considered.
"Everybody knows Japan's claims of whaling for 'scientific research' are just a way to get whale meat onto Japanese
dinner tables. The humpback whale was almost hunted into extinction. We can not allow it to become a target for Japanese
harpoon guns," she says.
"Everyone also knows that Japan can only win majority support at the IWC by shamelessly buying votes from tiny island
states which are desperate for financial assistance.
"Humpbacks are often seen from the coast in the South Pacific and are a major thrill for tourists. There will be
international outrage over this plan.
Ms Fitzsimons and Australian Green's Senator Bob Brown are working together to develop transTasman action to prevent
humpback whaling.
"This may include calls for a boycott of certain Japanese products by consumers both here and in Australia, Ms
Fitzsimons says.
