Aussies show the way on tax cuts
ACT Leader Rodney Hide today called on Labour to follow Australia’s lead and use its record surplus to give workers a
tax cut in the Budget.
Mr Hide was commenting on Australian Treasurer Peter Costello’s expected budget announcement of across the board tax
cuts today.
“The Australian government is working with a projected budget surplus of $8 billion – the same as Labour’s, but with
five times New Zealand’s population,” Mr Hide said.
“Finance Minister Michael Cullen could easily deliver a tax cut for every worker. It’s fair, affordable and Kiwis
deserve it”.
Mr Hide said ACT is the only low-tax party in Parliament committed to delivering a tax cut for every worker. “ACT will
drop the top personal and company tax rate to 25c in the dollar and drop the 21c rate to 15c. That’s a tax cut for every
worker.
“Labour has been over-taxing hard-working Kiwis for years, and a tax cut for every worker is long overdue,” Mr Hide
said.
A recent NBR poll revealed that 62 percent of New Zealanders believe they pay too much tax.
