Prime Minister Helen Clark must release the transcripts of her calls with the Sunday Star Times in which she knifed former Police Commissioner Peter Doone in the back, ACT leader Rodney Hide said today.
“Helen Clark’s treatment of Peter Doone was dishonest and underhand.
“We know that Helen Clark confirmed to the Sunday Star Times that Peter Doone intervened on a rookie officer about to breath-test Peter Doone’s girlfriend,” Mr Hide said.
“The Sunday Star Times relied on Helen Clark’s confirmation of the story because she was the Prime Minister and was privy to confidential reports on the incident. She was in a position to know what had happened.
“Helen Clark worked to get rid of Peter Doone by confirming false stories to the media. She can’t escape by saying she simply confirmed what the paper already knew. The paper would never have run the story if she hadn’t confirmed it.
“Helen Clark’s lawyer has the transcripts of her conversations with the Sunday Star Times. Helen Clark should come clean and release them. That way the public can see exactly what she did.
