Hawkins should go
ACT Leader Rodney Hide today said that George Hawkins should step down as Police Minister.
"It's clear that Mr Hawkins does not enjoy the support of the Prime Minister or his own party. He was dropped to list placing number 25 beside Ashraf Choudhary - so low that Mr Hawkins opted off the list. Neither the Prime Minister nor Labour Party President Mike Williams have dispelled the obvious conclusion that Mr Hawkins' career is over.
"George Hawkins is now a lame-duck Minister of Police. The country can't afford it.
"Mr Hawkins should step down in favour of someone who does enjoy the Prime Minister's support. Failing that, Helen Clark should put the protection of New Zealanders first, fire George Hawkins, and put up a Police Minister who does have her confidence.
"Helen Clark can't claim to be taking law and order seriously with a lame-duck Minister of Police," said Rodney Hide.
