Another botch-up in Labour’s building laws
“It is disgraceful that before the ink has even dried on Labour’s new Building Act, amendments are being rushed through Parliament,” says National’s Building and Construction spokesman.
“Late today, just prior to recess, Labour slipped a Bill into Parliament to fix the problems with building codes in the Building Act 2004. This gives the select committee only 12 days to consider the Bill.
“Labour is making one botch-up after another with the building industry. We first had George Hawkins ignoring major concerns about leaky homes for a year, then the Prime Minister’s ‘I don’t care’ response to leaky home owners, the failing resolution service legislation and now problems with the new Building Act.
“The scam in this latest mess is that Ministers have known of this problem since last December, but have done nothing. Fixing rushed legislation with more rushed legislation is a recipe for disaster.
“This is just the beginning of the huge problems with the new Building Act which comes into effect in two weeks. This huge $18 billion a year industry deserves far better than this sort of incompetence,” says Dr Smith.
