More failure in parole system

ACT Justice spokesman Stephen Franks today commended Ron Mark MP for publicising yet another example of the inevitable
failure in the parole and home detention system, but now said it was time to look for solutions.
"ACT has consistently pressed for truth in sentencing and the end of apologies for punishment," Mr Franks said.
"Helen Clark's latest victims would have been protected by abolishing parole, mandatory post sentence supervision with
random testing, no name suppression, automatic recall in breach of conditions and full disclosure to unsuspecting
communities of the criminal records of people secreted back at the end of their sentences.
"Labour's pretend toughening up has actually reduced average non-parole periods for our most serious offenders who are
sentenced to preventive detention.
"The medium average sentence increase through longer nominal headline sentences is more than balanced by the message
criminals actually receive, from early parole, home detention, and feeble supervision.
"The victims deserve better, but they won't get it without a change of government," Mr Franks said.
