MP launches book about Gallipoli - Scarecrow Army
Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Judith Tizard launched Leon Davidson's book Scarecrow Army last night,
which records a young soldier's view of the war in Gallipoli.
Judith Tizard said that the launch of the book is particularly significant, given the forthcoming commemoration of the
90th anniversary of the Anzac landings in Gallipoli.
On 25 April 1915, thousands of Australians and New Zealanders landed at an unnamed cove on the Gallipoli Peninsular. In
Scarecrow Army, Leon Davidson explores the events that unfolded, by incorporating fact and fiction. The book is suitable
for children over the age of nine and is a valuable resource for schools and libraries.
Judith Tizard said that Leon Davidson's book covers an important period in New Zealand's history, as it records
significant memories about our country’s wartime experiences.
"We New Zealanders are, I believe, increasingly interested in our own history – in marking the stories and events which
have brought us to this point," Judith Tizard said.
"I feel very privileged to have visited Gallipoli. It is a sacred place and I think it is important for our younger
generation to understand the events that took place there.
"Understanding more about how, where, and why these ordinary New Zealanders died, and about the impact on my family, has
helped me understand the forces and events which shaped our people, our country and our values. And it has reinforced
for me a determination that we must never forget, and that their memory should be honoured for all time.
"Scarecrow Army records an truly significant period in New Zealand's history. It is a beautifully written publication
with exceptional historical photos. I congratulate Leon on this significant achievement," Judith Tizard said.
