Turner: 'Hubba Hubba' for a hundred grand a week
Young New Zealanders have been short-changed by the $100,000 a week spent on the just-completed three-month 'hubba hubba' condom campaign, United Future deputy leader Judy Turner said today in revealing the campaign's cost and questioning its worth.
"That's $1.3 million dollars on a dumbed-down, one-dimensional message - compare it to the Scottish equivalent, 'Respect and Responsibility'.
"Spot the difference? For a start, they don't treat their young like morons," Mrs Turner said.
"And they certainly show respect for them as people, so the measure of a successful sex education campaign is more than just the absence of sexually transmitted infections or unwanted pregnancies.
"When are we going to treat our young people with some respect?" Mrs Turner asked.
She said the Scottish campaign depicts sexual well being as firmly embedded in values and relationships, respect for self and the feelings and values of others.
"And our Government says 'No Rubba, No Hubba Hubba' - how embarrassingly shallow!
"If we're going to spend decent money on sex education campaigns, then let's do it properly and treat young New Zealanders as the questing, questioning, growing people that they are," she said.
