Scrap Home Detention Says Mark
New Zealand First spokesperson for law and order Ron Mark is again calling for the Government to face up to the reality
that home detention must go.
This follows the recapture of Sean Broderick, who was described as a violent high-risk offender, and who breached home
detention a month ago.
“What was this man doing serving the rest of his prison sentence at home when he was so clearly a threat to public
safety?” asked Mr Mark.
“People should be demanding to know why their safety was put at risk and why this man is not being charged with escaping
from a penal institution rather than merely breaching the conditions of his home detention.
“The Government continues to allow a system where violent offenders, including drug dealers and wife beaters, can dodge
jail and breach home detention.
“It appears to care more about keeping prison inmate statistics down and cutting the costs of incarceration than keeping
people safe, “ Mr Mark concluded.
