Put some turkey on the table, Dr Cullen

National’s Finance spokesman, John Key, is challenging the Government to buy every New Zealander a turkey for Christmas.
He says the latest Government accounts show that once again it is awash with cash. The accounts show that tax revenue rose by $433 million in the four months ended October 31.
“If this continues for the full year, the Government would have collected about $46 billion. That is 53 percent more that the $30 billion it was collecting when it came to office in 1999,” Mr Key says.
“As it stands, the Government earns an extra $43 million more each day than it did when it came to office – due to the overtaxing of all New Zealanders – and yet the Minister of Finance has all but dismissed the idea of tax cuts.
“If Dr Scrooge isn’t prepared to cut taxes, why doesn’t he just give back the additional revenue for the week before Christmas and send every New Zealander, young and old, a cheque for $75.
“If he did that, many families, pensioners, and low income New Zealanders could enjoy a turkey with all the trimmings for Christmas, instead of the cold shoulder they are likely to get from a Minister who is increasingly starting to look like the turkey himself,” Mr Key says.
