A gay and happy day
The Green Party is elated that the Civil Union Bill has been passed.
"This is a gay and happy day - heterosexual and same-sex people in de facto relationships can now get coupled," said Nandor Tanczos, the Greens' Justice Spokesperson.
"Green MPs voting for the Civil Union Bill are mandated by both our own consciences and those of the New Zealanders who elected us. Civil Unions are Green policy and everyone who voted Green voted for equal rights, justice and a more inclusive society," said Nandor.
The first point of the Greens' Sexual Orientation Policy states that "Rainbow communities are entitled to equal opportunities in law and in practice." The Civil Union Bill is an important step towards realising that right.
